When you’re young and choosing a career, there’s little doubt that money serves as a motivating factor to some degree. Professions such as law, medicine and accounting offer fairly prosperous career opportunities. But before you get to that stage, you need to study, complete your articles and work your way up the ladder.

What can you expect to earn as a trainee CA(SA)?

Generally speaking, the salary and packages on offer to trainee accountants reflect the cost of living in any given country. In South Africa they even differ from city to city with those in Jo’burg often earning more than those in other cities, salaries also differ from firm to firm. It’s worth remembering that smaller firms will most likely offer a smaller salary than their bigger counterparts.

Bear in mind that you are not fully qualified yet and have little to no experience which means you can’t expect a high-flying salary. You are right at the beginning of your career and your days as a trainee are geared to equip you with the necessary skills, knowledge and values of a CA (SA). Make sure your focus is on making the most of the opportunities given to you during your articles, and on mastering the skills and knowledge you need to become the best at what you do.

As with every profession, you still need to prove yourself and there is no better time to do so than when you are a trainee. Rather than focusing on what you think you should be earning, choose instead to use your time as a trainee for the purpose it was intended: as the foundation for your career. Use this time wisely to obtain the necessary skills and experience required as a CA (SA) and you will be laying the groundwork for a successful career in the future.

Remember what made you decide to become a CA (SA) in the first place and what you enjoy about this profession. Your job needs to be about more than simply money. Although it’s nice to be handsomely rewarded for what you do, you should be able to cite more than your pay cheque as your motivation.

Take heart from the fact that you have many years ahead of you to make a success of your career and to enjoy the financial rewards associated with it. Remember that we all have to start at the bottom, but you will get the opportunity to move up the ladder as you earn your qualifications and gain experience.
