Meet Abed Tau - Director of Thamani Financial Services (PTY) LTD and co-founder of Tuta-Me (PTY) LTD, 28

Recently qualified CA(SA), Abed Tau has always had an entrepreneurial spirit, believing that he would be an entrepreneur since he was a young boy.

He explains that his family encouraged him to become a CA(SA), a route he took gladly as he believes it’s a qualification that provides individuals with a fantastic springboard into the business world and a sound understanding of business fundamentals.

Abed won a bursary from Deloitte and today is the co-founder of a tutoring company called Tuta-Me, an app that pairs tutors with students using a more selective approach than many of the hit and miss pairings that currently take place. Tuta-Me validates all its tutors – using a similar model to the one used by Uber – and enables students to select a tutor that will best suit their needs and availability. Anyone interested in tutoring can join after they have matched the criteria for experience and qualifications and it has been confirmed that they do not have a criminal record.

The app was developed by Abed’s partner Dylan Hyslop, who has a BSc, and stemmed from the two meeting purely by chance in a pub. “I had recently returned from a visit to Silicon Valley and I was feeling so inspired by new developments in technology –companies like Uber and Airbnb, as well as the multitude of person-to-person derivatives coming on stream,” Abed recalls. Abed and Dylan immediately hit it off with both being of the opinion that technology has the ability to create change and develop micro-entrepreneurs, as well as being able to create employment opportunities by opening new markets.

Tuta-Me has been extremely successful: it was a finalist in MTN’s App of the Year 2016, going against market leaders such as Pick ‘n Pay, DStv, Vodacom and CliffCentral. It also won the Breakthrough App of the Year. Moreover, Tuta-Me is South Africa’s first on-demand tutoring edu-tech start up and was recently placed second by Hack Jozi, the City of Johannesburg and the JCSE in the best tech start up in South Africa, winning a prize of R35 000.

Abed is also the Director of Thamani Financial Solutions, a consultancy focusing primarily on the SMME environment. The company provides IT solutions, HR consulting, accounting and tax advisory, training and business advisory services. Thamani Financial Services was founded by Abed and Tebogo Suhume and they have recently brought a third partner into the business, Thuto Motsie.

Both business are showing sound growth and now comprise a team of 12 full time employees.
